Orlando is a fun destination for the whole family, with plenty to do and see. If you’ll be visiting in the near future, do yourself a favor and don’t rely on the public transport system. Renting a car in Orlando will make it much easier- particularly if you’re traveling with kids. That way, you won’t need to worry about getting a shuttle back to your hotel from the theme parks, or finding a bus from the mall so your kids can nap.
Here are some of the best things to do in Orlando:
Be an astronaut for a day
The Kennedy Space Center is still one of the most exciting attractions in Orlando. Here, you’ll learn all about what astronauts go through, and what their life is like when they’re up in space. The exhibits here are all super high-tech and interactive, and use technology like augmented reality and holograms. The Shuttle Launch Experience will give you a realistic idea of what it’s really like to go to space.
Head to Discovery Cove
Discovery Cove is located close to SeaWorld, but with fewer crowds. Here, you’ll find exotic birds (which you can hand feed) and you can even go snorkeling with rays, swimming with dolphins, and see tropical fish. Whether you want to do a bunch of activities or just lie around enjoying the wildlife, there’s something for everyone at Discovery Cove.
Hit the theme parks
Of course, if you’re planning a trip to Orlando, there’s a pretty good chance you’re going to want to ride some roller coasters. Whether it’s DisneyWorld, Universal Studio, or one of the many other parks, you’ll probably want to book a rental car in Orlando. This will mean that you don’t need to rely on public transport, Uber, or hotel shuttles. Instead, you can come and go as you please- getting there early to avoid the worst of the lines and leaving whenever the kids (or you) need a nap.
Check out the Gators
Gatorland is both a wildlife preserve and a theme park. That means that it’s both a fun and educational experience for visitors of all ages. You can even wrestle an alligator (or alternatively, feed some baby gators). Feeling adventurous? Take a zip line over the crocodiles.
Relive History
If you loved Titanic, be sure to check out Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition. This is the place to go if you’re fascinated by the most famous ship in history. If you’re visiting on a Friday or Saturday, you’ll be able to enjoy the Titanic Gala Dinner. Otherwise, be sure to explore the exhibition, which features seventeen galleries packed with information and history, full-scale replicas of some of the parts of the ship, and a real piece of the Titanic’s hull. For true fans, visit on the 14th of April for a tour of the museum, a dinner featuring meals from the menu, and even a reenactment.
Get outside
If you’re hoping to enjoy some of the natural scenery in Florida, you should definitely head to the Tibet-Butler Nature Preserve. You’ll be able to escape some of the crowds- even in peak season. Take a walk under the shade, and choose one of the six trails depending on how active you feel. The trails range from a short half-mile walk to hikes that are up to several miles long. This is one of the best places for spotting wildlife in the state, so keep an eye out for various types of birds, bobcats, gopher tortoises, and even bald eagles.
Not feeling all that active? Bring a picnic and a good book.
