More and more people are choosing to ditch the idea of a 9-5 and instead plan to travel long-term. If this sounds like you, there are a few things you need to know before you tell your boss to start looking for your replacement.

Don’t get me wrong- long-term travel can be hugely rewarding, and I believe everyone should do it for at least a couple of years in their lifetime. Along the way, you can enjoy Webjet holiday packages, long-term leases, and everything in between. But here are a few things to keep in mind before you hit the road:

You need more cash than you think

We’ve all met that one guy who heads to Southeast Asia with $300 in his bank account and the plan to live off the goodwill of others. Don’t be this guy (or girl). Even in places like Thailand, Bali, Mexico, and Guatemala, you need to have some savings to have a decent quality of life. You don’t want to be the only one left at the hostel while everyone else goes to the elephant sanctuary or the one sadly eating cereal for dinner cause you can’t afford to go out for a group dinner. Spend a couple of extra month saving- you won’t regret it.

Work on the road

There’s nothing worse than traveling in amazing places and watching your bank account dwindle- knowing that as soon as you run out of cash you’ll be heading home. One of the best things you can do is sort out an income stream before you leave. That way, you can work while you travel. Sure, this will mean fewer days out seeing the sights and more time spent huddled over a keyboard. But if it all works out, you won’t need to return home unless you really want to.

Take travel insurance

If I can give tourists one piece of advice, it’s this: Take travel insurance with you. You never know when you’re going to step on a rusty nail, twist an ankle, or lose your passport. Not only does travel insurance give you the peace of mind you need while you’re traveling, but your family will also know you’re covered and won’t be calling them asking for thousands of dollars in the event of a medical emergency. You can easily get Webjet cheap travel insurance, making it well worth it.
